Warsaw, Kraków and Wrocław. An unusual ranking of cities in Poland – Podróże Wprost

Wrocław

The latest analysis by the Institute of Media Monitoring shows that Warsaw, Kraków and Wrocław were the local governments in the country most frequently present in media coverage.

Warsaw is a leader in the media. Krakow on the podium

Warsaw turned out to be unrivaled, achieving almost 48.8 million media points. This result is similar to the total value of the next two cities on the list. The capital regularly appeared in the media in the context of large investments and administrative decisions, but also controversy.

There was a lot of talk about the project of the Municipal Adaptation Center and the finalization of the New Center project, which was to connect both banks of the Vistula. Emotions were also aroused by rent increases in Jazdów and the announcement of the return of the “Rainbow” installation to the square. Savior, which caused political disputes.

Kraków came in second place with a score of 26.5 million points. In the case of the capital of Małopolska, the media coverage was extremely polarized. Much attention was paid to the plans referendum on the dismissal of Aleksander Miszalski and assessment of the city authorities’ activities.

Discussions on social media often took a sharp, critical tone, including: city finances, increases and transport policy in the context of ticket price increases and the Clean Transport Zone.

Wrocław in the shadow of Warsaw. The latest report

Wrocław closes the podium with a score of 25.5 million points. The capital of Lower Silesia attracted attention both in the context of investments and administrative decisions. The most frequently discussed topics included increases in cemetery fees, the “Wrocław is getting vaccinated” health campaign and changes in the city’s spatial management. There were also discussions about the future of restaurant gardens in the Market Square, the “Wrocław 2050” strategy and political disputes in KO structures in Lower Silesia.

Which cities dominate the media?

– The scale of media presence alone does not reflect the full picture of media coverage. Its meaning is largely determined by the tone of the message. In Krakow, it was highly polarized, which resulted in an intense discussion on social media – explained Tomasz Lubieniecki, Head of the Media Reports Department at IMM.

– Contentious topics clearly increase their reach – rent increases in Warsaw by 236%, the referendum in Krakow and the increase in cemetery fees in Wrocław achieved above-average interest in both traditional media and social channels. In such situations, conflict drives engagement and content distribution, the expert added.
