Artificial intelligence will not win Oscars. New, stricter rules have been announced

The new rules specify the requirements that films must meet to be considered for the Oscars. The 99th awards ceremony will take place March 14, 2027

The greatest emotions – for understandable reasons – arouse regulations regarding AI. Artificial intelligence is being used more and more widely in the film industry. Recently, there has been much talk about the “resurrection” of Val Kilmer for the film “As Deep as the Grave”. This image used an image of the deceased actor generated by AI with the consent of the family.

The new rules announced by the Academy say that only roles played by humans will be eligible for Oscar nominations. So there is no question of rewarding digital avatars.

Restrictions on AI have also been introduced in the scenario category. Prizes will also be awarded in this case only for works written by people. The question remains whether there may be fraud attempts here – it is increasingly difficult to distinguish text written by human hand from that generated by language models.

The Academy also reserves that in case of any doubts, it may contact the film’s creators additional information on the nature of their use of artificial intelligence.

The remaining changes are not related to artificial intelligence, but may have an interesting impact on the course of next year’s gala. It was decided, among other things, that actors can be nominated for different roles in the same category. For this to happen, their performances must be among the five for which the most votes were cast.

The refreshed rules also apply to the “Best International Film” category. So far, the competition included paintings submitted by special commissions from individual countries. Now the Academy has also created an alternative route.

A film that wins the main prize at one of the prestigious festivals will also be able to compete for an Oscar in this category Cannes, Busan, Berlin, Sundance, Toronto or Venice. This means that next year in the international category two films from the same country may meet – one submitted by the national committee and the other awarded at a leading festival.

In the international films category There is one more subtle change to appear. “It is the film that will be announced as a nominee, not the country or region. The director will accept the award on behalf of the film’s creative team. The director’s name will be placed on a plaque attached to the statuette after the film’s title and, where applicable, the country or region’s name,” the Academy explains.
