The story of the dog hiker was described in detail by journalists from the hnonline.sk portal. They added up the route sections between the places where the animal was seen, determining that the dog first appeared on the Slovak side of the Tatra Mountains on June 30. In the following days, he was observed at various landmarks in the mountains, such as Kriváń, Shelter under Scratches, Popradzki Staw Whether Strbske Pleso.

The animal regularly descended into the valleys at night and returned to higher hiking trails the next day. According to reports, the dog approached touristsbut he quickly moved away, not allowing himself to be caught. Over time, he became increasingly distrustful of those trying to capture him.

A threat to wildlife and tourists

Animal rights activists from the “Road to Home” association attempted to capture the dog, fearing that its presence in the national park may pose a threat to both wild animals and tourists visiting the Tatra Mountains. Representatives of the association are convinced that the dog came to the mountains from Poland. After several days of attempts, on Friday evening, he was finally caught in a trap cage.

The rescuers who took care of the animal described it as shy and looking for contact with humans. They named him Bernard, referring to the patron saint of mountaineers, tourists, skiers and mountain rescuers.

According to rescuers, Bernard may have been wandering on the Polish side of the Tatra Mountains for several weeks before he reached Slovakia. In earlier photos he is seen in the company of another, very similar dog, which is probably his brother. The second dog is still at large and was last seen in the Kościeliska Valley area.
