On July 6, Leicester Square in London turned into the center of world cinema. The ceremonial premiere of “The Odyssey” attracted the biggest stars of world film who starred in Christopher Nolan’s latest work on the red carpet.
Among those present were Matt Damon, playing the main role of Odysseus, as well as Zendaya, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, John Leguizamo, Benny Safdie, Himes Patel, Samantha Morton, Elliot Page, Travis Scott, Mia Goth and Corey Hawkins. One of the attractions of the evening was an impressive replica of the Trojan horse used on the film set.
“A triumphant, spectacular epic”
Although before the premiere there were controversies regarding, among others, historical inaccuracies in costumes or the casting of Lupita Nyong’o as Helena, the show is dominated by admiration. Critics lavish superlatives, describing “The Odyssey” as “a stunning achievement“, “flawless filmmaking” and “a real treat for cinema lovers” In the comments, they emphasize that even if the film has weaker moments, “the final act rewards the entire journey.”
According to Collider’s Peri Nemiroff, “a wonderful and gripping adaptation of Homer’s epic that clearly showcases Christopher Nolan’s distinctive style. It’s truly hard to imagine that any other director in the world would have been able to bring this source material to the screen with such panache and heart.”
Acting at the highest level
Critics agree that the film’s cast was up to the challenge. Simon Thompson, film journalist, emphasizes:
Matt Damon gives his all in the strongest role of his career. Robert Pattinson is brilliant as Antinous and John Leguizamo’s Eumaeus is simply brilliant.
Clayton Davis notes the unique chemistry between the actors:
Matt Damon brings determination to the film, and Tom Holland brings sensitivity and heart. This is another Nolan hit that his die-hard fans will analyze for decades to come.
Robert Pattinson, who plays Antinous, also received rave reviews. He is so cunning, manipulative and an endless pleasure to watch. Pattinson fully empathizes with his character’s villainy, resulting in one of my favorite roles of his work – emphasizes Erik Davis from Fandango.
A cinema worthy of a legend
Joshua Rothkopf, film editor of the Los Angeles Times, assesses the production:
Stunning. Earthy, spooky, full of depth, filled with both humor and grandeur. This is pure cinema and a return to the extremely addictive action films for which cinema was invented.
Nolan’s film is not only a spectacle, but also a journey through emotions and universal values carried by the story of Odysseus and his return to Ithaca after the Trojan War. The creator of “Inception” and “Interstellar” has once again proven that he can create worlds that amaze with their breadth and depth.
Cinema premiere coming soon
“The Odyssey” will officially hit theaters on July 17. The film is already being announced as one of the most important film events of this year, and the first reviews only fuel viewers’ expectations. Nolan fans and lovers of great film spectacles can expect a cinema that will remain in their memory for a long time.
